CEFR Language Levels
German language proficiency is internationally measured using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This framework provides a transparent and reliable way to describe language skills across six standardised levels, from beginner to near-native proficiency.
Dumela Deutsch’s language course structure, teaching methods, teaching materials, and learning objectives follow this framework. The same international standard is used by the Goethe-Institut and the Austrian German Language Diploma (ÖSD) for their officially recognised German language exams.

A1 Beginner
Learners can understand and use basic everyday expressions. They can introduce themselves, ask and answer simple questions, and interact in a very basic way when the other person speaks slowly and clearly.
A2 Elementary
Learners can communicate in routine situations requiring a simple exchange of information. They can describe aspects of their background, immediate environment, and everyday needs.
B1 Intermediate
Learners can handle most situations likely to arise while travelling or working in a German-speaking environment. They can produce simple connected texts, express opinions, and describe experiences, goals, and plans.
B2 Upper Intermediate
This level indicates independent language use. Learners can understand complex texts, participate actively in discussions, and communicate fluently and spontaneously with native speakers in professional and social contexts.
C1 Advanced
Learners can use German effectively and flexibly for social, academic, and professional purposes. They can understand demanding texts, express ideas precisely, and produce well-structured, detailed communication.
C2 Proficient (Near-Native)
At this highest level, learners can understand virtually everything they read or hear. They can express themselves spontaneously, very fluently, and with a high degree of precision, even in complex or abstract situations.
